German in the Junior Cycle

German is taught at three levels:

1. Native Speakers (DM)

The DM course is aimed at students that are native German speakers and have a high level of fluency in the language. DM students have 8 periods of German per week and the course is broken down as follows:

German is taught for three periods per weeks
Landeskunde (German Culture) is taught for two periods per week
Internationale Geschichte (International History) is  taught for three periods per week
 

2. Foreign Language Learners (DF)

The DF course is aimed at students that have attended St Kilian’s primary school and already have knowledge of the language. DF students have 8 periods of German per week and the course is broken down as follows:

German is taught for three periods per weeks  

Landeskunde (German Culture)is taught for two periods per week Internationale Geschichte (International History)is taught for three periods per week

3. Beginners (DN)

The DN course is aimed at students that are new to the German language in first year. DN students have 8 periods of intensive German per week.

German in Transition Year

German is taught at three levels in Transition Year:

1. Native Speakers (DM)

The DM course is aimed at students that are native German speakers and have a high level of fluency in the language. DM students have 9 periods of German per week and the course is broken down as follows:

German is taught for six periods per weeks Internationale Geschichte (German history)is taught for three periods per week
Students undertake the 'Sprachdiplom I' exam

2. Foreign Language Learners (DS)

The DS course is aimed at students that have acquired an exceptionally good knowledge of the language in the Junior Cycle. DS students have 9 periods of German per week and the course is broken down as follows:
  
German is taught for six periods per weeks 

Internationale Geschichte (German history)is taught for three periods per week
Students undertake the 'Sprachdiplom I' exam

3. Leaving Certificate (DL)

The DL course focuses on the Leaving Certificate. DL students have 9 periods of German per week and the course is broken down as follows:

German is taught for six periods per weeks  Landeskunde (German culture)is taught for three periods per week
