Our Concern debating team, Martin, Karli, Jenny, Gareth and Marianne, from 11th class maintained their unbeaten record last night when they won their debate against Rockford Manor arguing that the United Nations should not consider retirement on this the anniversary of its 65th birthday.
Rockford hosted the debate and gave us a very warm welcome. The chief adjudicator was Evanna Craig of Concern, organiser of the competition, who spoke afterwards about the devastation in Haiti as a result of the earthquake and of their missing Concern colleagues who had been working there. Our joy at winning was tempered with sadness at the desperate plight of so many people in this poor country.

Mustaki fires Killian’s into All-Ireland final
St Kilian’s DSD are just 90 minutes away from All-Ireland success after capping an incredible seven days with victory over Mulroy College in yesterday’s FAI Schools Senior B national semi-final.
Just six days after seeing off Balbriggan Community College to claim their first ever Leinster crown, Kilian’s dumped out the Donegal secondary school thanks to a last-gasp strike from captain Chloe Mustaki.
The U15 Schools international struck the second of her two-goal haul in the 90th minute at Monaghan’s Kingspan Park to send the Dublin school beyond the reigning All-Ireland champions and into the finals.
Killian’s also defeated Leinster holders Grennan College, of Kilkenny, on their way to claiming the provincial crown, and are now just one victory away from the perfect season.
“It has been an incredible week for us and now we will focus on giving it one more effort in the final,” said coach Allister Harvey.
“Fingers crossed we can cap what has been a great season so far with one more win in the final. Our aim this season was to improve on last year’s campaign and the younger girls that have come through have done really well. We lost a lot of senior girls who graduated last year, but to achieve this type of success with such a young group really looks good for the future. Whatever happens in the final, fingers crossed we can go on in the coming years and achieve even more success.”
Julia Martinez was unfortunate to see her effort cannon back off the post as the side’s traded blows in a second half high in quality, but it was a bit of luck that brought Kilian’s back into the contest.
Mustaki’s long range shot was miss-judged by the Mulroy keeper and slipped beyond her grasp and over the line.
With both sides pushing for the crucial second goal before extra time, Kilian’s snatched victory in the 90th minute when Mustaki popped up with another ling range strike that flew beyond the goalkeeper’s grasp.
St Kilian’s team: Ellen Nolan, Charlotte Beer, Alexander Gonzalez, Sadbh Hoban Logan, Molly Brady, Vesna Popping (Mary O’Toole), Chloe Mustaki, Lisa Urban, Justine Elfort (Rianna Rowan), Julia Martinez, Anna Heisterkamp.

Soccer Update
Both the boys and girls teams have been competing, with great success and distinction, in the lead up to Christmas. Within both sections, we have fielded teams at under 14s, under 16s and under 18s level. Also, within the boys section, we have competed in the under 19s league.
As we enter the new decade, we are in an enviable position. The girls have recently won the Leinster Under 18s B Cup, beating Balbriggan Community School comprehensively in the final. They now meet Milford School from Donegal, who are Ulster Champions, in the All-Ireland semi-finals. This game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27th, with a neutral venue in Monaghan hosting the game.
The Under 16 Girls team had a great ‘run’ in the A Cup, losing narrowly, after extra time, to Moyne College from Longford, who are strongly tipped to go on to win the competition, after accounting for us at the quarter-final stage. The Under 14s are due to play Eureka College of Kells in the quarter finals of their cup competition – it will be tough assignment, given that it’s an away game and that our opponents have a long established record of doing well in girls football.
The boys have been matching the girls in the progress that they’ve made to the latter stages of competitions. They have qualified for the Under 18 Leinster B Cup, which is scheduled for Thursday, January 28th in Peamount United’s / FAI ground, after winning a pulsating semi-final in Newbridge before Christmas. Their opponents will be Colaiste de H-ide.
The league campaigns have also been successful, with the Under 19s and Under 16s progressing well. Both teams have won through their difficult group stages and are currently in the semi-finals of each of the Metropolitan league competitions. The added bonus is that both teams are due to play their semi-finals at home.
Within our playing ranks, some players have been making great individual strides in football circles. Chloe Mustaki captained the Leinster Under 15s team to success in the recent inter-Provincial tournament in Athlone, as well as winning another ‘cap’ for the Republic of Ireland Under 16 Schools team in their recent game against Northern Ireland. She played at left back in a close game, which finished 3-3. Her achievement is all the more remarkable given the fact that she is eligible to play under 14s football. Within our boys teams, Brian McCann has been involved with the FAI Emerging Talent Programme for the last year, a programme designed to filter players into the full international team. Over the Christmas period, Brian played in defence in one of a number of trial-type matches held countrywide, his being held in Waterford.

Tara was everywhere playing centre forward when we had the ball and dropping into midfield when we lost it. Saoirse was driving down the left wing getting to the post looking for goals. After 6 minutes Anna won a ball fed Katie who drove down the right and drilled in a ball and Tara swept home to put us 1-0 up. A brilliant goal!! For the next 5 minutes we played brilliant hockey keeping Alex pinned back. Eve was winning everything on the left side. Our back four Molly, Rhiannon, Aine and Emer never gave Alex a sniff of our goal. Molly playing her best game to date had a very good right wing tied up. After 13 minutes Leah and Natalie came on and Leah nearly scored. With Tara dropping into midfield we were winning lots of ball, which allowed Anna and Katie to drive forward. Emer Clissmann and Rhiannon were stepping up to help us keep Alex pressed into their half.

Under 13Team Remain Unbeaten
Our under 13B team came up against the mighty St. Andrews in their 7th. league game. Missing star players Freddie Carew,Samuel Hegner, Jake McCarthy and Dan Rees, we called up 3 star players from 5th. class in primary school, Daoire Connolly, Dan Raymond and Hugh Perrette. We had Yannick Randhawa back after being out sick and he slotted back into left midfield.

Up front Hugh, Luka and Daoire were up against a very big defense and found it hard to get shots away. At the back William, Finn, Oliver and Slava were having a great battle with the St. Andrews forwards. Jake Linnane was superb in goals and made three world class saves to deny St. Andrews in the first half. Dan and Ben Raymond came on for Hugh and Daoire and got straight into the game. It was end to end.
Half Time St. Kilians 0 St. Andrews 0
Again we started well and a team which had 6 primary school boys was holding its own against a bigger St. Andrews team. Our back four were being put under pressure but Jake Linnane was superb in goals and kept us in the game. Jessie Kamm was driving down the right and drilling in balls and we were unlucky not to score twice when Hugh just missed from one cross and Daoire from another. We played some excellent hockey with a very young side and deserved a draw.
Well Done Boys!!!

St. Kilians Juniors Share A Cracker With St. Andrews
Our under 16 team led by captain David Kane had an excellent draw with St. Andrews. The line up In goals Shane Bourke, left back Rory McCullagh, Right back Roger Gonzalez, centre back Donal Burns and sweeper Alex Witte, back in action after being out for weeks with a fractured hand. In midfield on the right Christopher Reilly, centre mid and captain David Kane and left mid Huw Rees. Up front on the right Sean Mullen, centre forward Lukas Hegner and right wing Lucas-Halwax-Sherry. On the bench James O Leary, Moritz Weltz, James Purcell, Alvaro Garcia. From the start this game was end to end. St. Andrews sweeper drilling balls down field and St. Kilians playing some excellent hockey to open up St. Andrews. Sean Mullen was using his pace and scorching down the right hand side. The Andrews keeper made two great saves to deny Sean. Alvaro came on at centre forward and missed two great chances in the first half as he was rusty, not having played at this level for months. Shane Bourke made some excellent saves to deny St. Andrews. James Purcell came on at left wing to have his best game of the season. His tackling and pace caused problems for the St. Andrews right back. David Kane was having a cracking game in centre mid ably assisted by Chris and Huw.No quarter asked or given in a titanic struggle for possession.
We went 1-0 down but refused to lie down and we came back strong in the second half . Alvaro moved to right mid to give Chris a breather. Moritz came on and nearly scored but the St. Andrews keeper made a great save. Rory McCullagh had an excellent second half up against a very strong right wing. Alex Vitte just back from injury had a stormer at sweeper and Donal and Roger gave their all at the back. We leveled the game with 10 minutes to go when a lovely passing move ended with Sean Mullen teeing the ball up and smashing the ball passed the keeper for a well deserved equalizer. Alvaro Garcia had to go off having pulled a muscle. Hope it's not serious as we need him back in action. With a minute to go we went long ball and again moved the ball right to Sean who again hit a rocket of a shot which scraped the paint of the post but went wide. We played some excellent hockey and will get better as we were a bit rusty.
Final score St. Kilians 1 St. Andrews 1
Man of the match: Sean Mullen who had a great game at right wing. Just pipping David and, Rory
Goal of the match: Sean Mullen
If we make a commitment to excellence and honor that commitment we have won the battle with ourselves.

Juniors Wallop Wesley With Seven Of The Best
Our junior team led by captain David Kane had an excellent win over Wesley on Friday to complete a good week having drawn with St. Andrews earlier. From the start St. Kilians played scintillating hockey and tore open the Wesley defense. David Kane pulled the strings in midfield ably assisted by Chris Reilly and Huw Rees. All three got on the score sheet. Sean Mullen is on top form and scoring goals to beat the band this season. His pace combined with a bullet of a shot is causing problems for all goalkeepers. He again got a brace of goals in this match. Our back four never allowed Wesley a sniff at goal .Roger, Donal, Alex and Rory. Shane Bourke had an easy time in goals during this game. James Purcell has added another notch to our attack with his pacey play down the left wing and made a great goal for Lucas-Halwax-Sherry. James tore down the pitch from his own 25 and swept a cross to Lucas who swept home for a brilliant goal.
David Kane also scored in the first half. Not to be outdone Hue Rees also scored. It was all over at half time as St. Kilians were 6-0 up. Chris scored the 7th.

Kilkenny Get A taste Of Sherry
Our under 14 team went to Kilkenny looking for a win which would get them back in the race to the play offs. The line up in goals Jake Linnane, right back Freddie Carew, centre back Finn Schonfeld and sweeper Lukas Hegner. In midfield on the left Lucas-Halwax-Sherry, on the right James O Leary and centre mid and captain Alex Witte. Up front on the right Jessie Kamm, centre forward Moritz Weltz and left wing Eric Prehn. On the bench Mark Noone and Slava Borodin.
We changed the formation with Lucas-Halwax-Sherry on the left of midfield and Moritz Weltz moving to centre forward. At the back Finn Schonfeld went to centre back and William to left back. Freddie Carew started at right back. From the start we were on top with Alex winning ball and sending Jessie away down the right. Jessie won a free after 3 mins and slipped the ball to Alex on top of the circle who drilled in but the keeper made a great save. We were all over Kilkenny and we won two corners but Kilkenny cleared.
They had a big strong sweeper who was clearing balls away. They broke and Jake had to make an excellent save to deny Kilkenny. Lukas Hegner was drilling some great balls to our wingers to set up attacks.
We had lots of chances but could not get the opening score until the 29th. minute when Jessie who was sensational down the right won a free and slipped a quick ball to Alex who was lurking on top of the circle and Alex smashed the ball into the goal to get us 1-0 up.
Half Time Kilkenny 0 St. Kilians 1
We spoke about going wide and drawing the sweeper out and slipping balls back inside and from the start of the second half we started to play some super hockey.
Our midfield of Alex, James and Lucas-Halwax Sherry who was having his best game to date was on top and moving the ball wide down the left and right and opening up Kilkenny. Moritz was dropping back into midfield and winning lots of ball. Eric Prehn was unlucky when hit a rocket on the reverse but the keeper saved. At the back Finn Schonfeld was in a battle royal with a big centre forward. Freddie Carew was super at right back getting in front of his man and drilling balls to Jessie who was scorching down the right all day and causing havoc. William was trying to keep their right back in check. We were playing our best hockey of the season and we won a penalty after 15 minutes.
Lucas-Halwax-Sherry stepped up and buried the ball low into the corner to put us 2-0 up, a well deserved lead.. Lucas was on fire and he won a ball sent it to James who returned the ball back to Lucas who swept home to put us 3-0 up. Again after some excellent work we won a corner. The ball was moved right Jessie who crossed back inside to Lucas who swept home for a super goal to put us 4-0 up.
Back came Kilkenny who scored after 26 minutes to bring the game back to 4-1. Jake Linnane made two great saves to keeper the score 4-1.
We played excellent hockey today with some great passing and everybody was on top form. The score did not reflect how well we played as a team and passed the ball.
Final Score Kilkenny 1 St. Kilians 4
Man of the match Lucas-Halwax-Sherry We had several players in contention. Jessie Kamm for his pace and crosses down the right. Alex for his midfield play Lucas-Halwax-Sherry for a scorching game at left mid. Lucas-Halwax-Sherry gets the nod for his play and goals.
Goal of the match Our Fourth from a corner which was switched right then back inside and swept home by Lucas. Contender for goal of the season.
Julia Keeps Us In and Sadhbh Puts Them Out
What a week for hockey in St. Kilians. All our boys teams won their league games and our 1st. year girls won their friendly on Saturday but none got near the senior cup match between St. Kilians and Manor House. In the 5 years I am here this was the most exciting game of all. We had extra time and penalties to decide the game. The lineup. In goals and captain Emma Purcell, centre back Molly Whelan, sweeper Jillian O Keefe and right back Martha Garcia and Deirdre Fitzgerald, left back Julia Kutchenmeister In midfield on the left Orla Clissmann, centre mids Karli Krobb and Sadhbh-Hoban-Logan, on the right Jessie Hayden. Up front Emma Fagan and Cathy Jenkins.
From the start it was end to end. Manor House were much bigger but we were as determined. Sadhbh was driving us forward and when Manor house broke we had Karli. Molly and Jillian blocking their way. When they did breakthrough Emma Purcell kicked the ball away from the circle. After 20 minutes we won our first corner and Jillian swept the ball to Sadhbh who drilled in but the keeper saved.
Half Time At. Kilians 0 Manor House 0
From the start Manor house attacked and Emma Purcell made a great save. Again it was end to end. Our back four Martha, Julia, Jillian and Molly were superb in holding out Manor House. After 10 minutes we nearly scored and Manor house broke out and won two corners. We defended them well with Sadhbh running one and clearing the ball away. After 22mins we attacked with sadhbh going on a mazy run beating three players and drilling just wide.
Just as the final whistle was blowing Emma Purcell kept us in the game with a great save and followed up with a second when the rebound was drilled in .
Final score 0-0.
Extra Time
We spoke about heart and spirit and who wants it the most now, would decide the game.
From the start we started to get on top with Karli, Molly, Jessie and Orla working their socks off to keep out Manor house and also setting up chances. Emma Fagan and Cathy Jenkins worked the circle trying to score.
Second half extra time
We lifted our game and pressed Manor House in and had several chances to score but their keeper and backs kept us out. I swore I saw 2 Molly Whelans on the pitch as she was everywhere in this half. At the back Jillian stepped forward and drilled any loose ball down the pitch. With 30 secs to go Sadhbh drilled in a ball witch looked to be going in but hit a foot and we won a corner.No2 called and the ball was swept out to sadhbh who drilled in but the keeper saved.
Full Time St. Kilians 0 Manor House 0
Penalties.
Molly, Sadhbd, Karli, Julia and Jillian volunteered to take a penalty. We had a short session on taking them so all were prepared.
Manor House won the toss and stepped up to take their first penalty. Emma Purcell saved it!
Up stepped Molly and the Manor House keeper saved. Up stepped Manor House and scored. 1-0 to Manor House
Up stepped Sadhbh who hit the post still 1-0 to MH.
Manor House stepped up again Emma saved. Up stepped Karli and their keeper again saved. Still 1-0 MH
Manor house stepped up for their fourth penalty and Emma saved. Up stepped Jillian and the Manor House keeper made a great save. Still 1-0 MH. Manor House stepped up for their fifth and if this went in we went out of the cup but Emma Purcell again saved.
Julia stepped up and had to score to keep our hopes alive and bring us to sudden death.
Julia stepped up and swept a low ball into the right hand corner to level the game at 1-1 in penalties.
Sudden Death
Sadhbh stepped up and decided to go high which surprised their keeper and the ball bounced off her into the back of the goal. We were ahead 2-1 on penalties. Up stepped the Manor House penalty taker but she pushed her ball wide to leave us the winners on penalties. What a match!!
This was a win for heart and spirit and a never say die attitude which the girls can be very proud of. They worked their socks off up and down the pitch for a famous victory. Richly deserved.
Girl of the Match. It's probably unfair to single out any one player but Julia Kutchenmeister gets the nod for her defending and stepping up to take the final penalty knowing she had to score to keep us in the game. Just pipping Molly Whelan, Jillian and Sadhbh.
Goal of the match Sadhbd who got the winning penalty.
Girls take a bow!!!!
What a week!!!!
