Our Primary School children in 2nd and 3rd classes enjoyed a very special visit from Verena and Claudia from the Goethe-Institut Ireland, who treated them to a captivating Kamishibai theatre performance based on the book When the Ravens Were Still Colorful by the author Edith Schreiber-Wicke and illustrator Carola Holland.
Through the engaging performance of a Kamishibai – a traditional Japanese form of storytelling that uses a small portable wooden theatre and illustrated story cards, Verena and Claudia retold the story of the ravens who were once colourful before they became black, exploring important topics such as diversity, bullying, tolerance, and inclusion in a child-friendly and meaningful way.
Following the performance, the children took part in a creative workshop where they worked on their own or in groups to create their own Kamishibai-style stories. The event concluded with the children proudly presenting their stories to their classmates. There were many unique ideas and fantastic illustrations on display, and everyone enjoyed listening to the stories.
We are looking forward to seeing more talented writers and illustrators over the coming days, as 1st and 4th classes will also experience this valuable Kamishibai theatre performance and workshop.
A big thank you to Claudia and Verena for sharing this unique visual and auditory experience with us, and well done to all the children for their creativity and enthusiasm!
