This morning, we were delighted to welcome students from Mount Anville Secondary School for a friendly German debate hosted at St. Kilian’s.
Teams of four debated the motion, “The use of AI should be promoted in schools”, a topic chosen by the students themselves. The proposition team from Mount Anville and the opposition team from St. Kilian’s demonstrated outstanding preparation and delivered their arguments entirely in German.
Both sides explored a series of topics, including the impact of AI on teaching and learning in schools, AI use in study materials, implications for third-level education and future careers, and the broader effects of AI on society, including the lack of critical thinking and its contribution to climate change.
The adjudicators from the Goethe-Institut faced the challenging task of selecting a winning team after such a closely contested exchange. In the end, the opposition team from St. Kilian’s narrowly won the debate.
Congratulations to both teams for an engaging and excellent debate celebrating German language, critical thinking, and collaboration. A big Thank you to the adjudicators from the Goethe-Institut, to the German teachers and to all the supporters from Mount Anville and St. Kilian’s, who were a fantastic audience.
