Our ongoing Kindness Project and our annual One School, One Book week went hand in hand this year. Our chosen book, The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan, is a curious exploration of difference. It challenges the reader to think how we so easily pigeon hole people, ideas and concepts which are outside our own experiences. It also promotes reflection on how we could and should consider that which we have not yet met – things that are lost to us. Are we in danger of homogenising everything?
There were many very interesting conversations in class even amongst the younger children – auf Deutsch and in English – and lots of displays around the school too celebrating difference and which also neatly fitted in with our Kindness Project theme of No Discrimination. Projects such as this are vital to the intellectual life of the children, developing, in particular, their critical thinking skills. The teachers have all worked passionately on the project and thank you to all of them.
